Ten Years . . . Wow!

We can hardly believe that it has been 10 years since our first public Zentangle class.

The days, weeks and months . . . and years! . . . just seem to zip by . . . all in a revery of excitement and gratitude.

We are both surprised and not so surprised by the shear magnitude of spectacular art created by artists around the world using the Zentangle method.

We are thankful for the strong Zentangle community that has grown around us. Thank you each and every one, artists all, for your support, friendship and encouragement that has enabled us to continue our journey.

In celebration, we will be giving gifts to some lucky commenters on this blog post. After one week, we will randomly choose 10 names and send each person a signed print of this anniversary original we created and will release publicly soon.

We will announce the names on July 24, 2014.

Thank you from our tangled hearts. We love you all.

Rick & Maria, and the staff at Zentangle Central

P.S.
We taught our first public Zentangle class at the annual meeting of the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) in Providence, RI, July 17, 2004. There happened to be an astrologer in the front row. When she heard it was our first class, she noted the time and later sent us a chart. She said that Zentangle would grow slowly and steadily, and that it would benefit people all over the world. Sweet memories.

P.P.S.
Appropriate to our tenth anniversary, an important addition recently agreed to join our Zentangle staff and will help a lot with this blog. We look forward to posting more frequently. Introductions to follow shortly!

Happy "Zenth" Anniversary!

  1. Congratulations! Zentangle has changed and enhanced the lives of many thousands of people around the world, and I am one of them. This is the refrain heard from almost everyone who encounters Zentangle: "Zentangle has released the artist within me." What an incredible gift, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Linda

  37. Happy, happy 10th anniversary. In some ways it seems like it has always been with us and in other ways it only seems like a short time. I have been around for a little over 7 years and I have learned a lot about myself and the art that I love. I enjoy the creative process so much more now that I don't put so much pressure on myself to be "perfect." I have learned to relax and let the enjoyment come from the experience. Thanks for showing us the way.

  59. I started tangling several years ago. Recently both my father-in-law and my husband were diagnosed with colon cancer. I spent several weeks in the hospital with my husband, and sat in hospice with my father-in-law until he passed. And, as my husband's chemo continues I still spend many hours waiting in the hospital. To say this is a stressful time would be an understatement. I have found that working on my Zentangles has been the best therapy! I carry my sketchbook with me everywhere. And, since I often have my 10-yr old granddaughter with me, we sit in the hospital and both work on them! She has her own sketchbook that she also carries with her. She even took it, and some extra supplies to share, to her sleepover at a friend's house tonight! We love sharing this with everyone! Maybe one of these days I will be able to actually take training to be a CZT!!

  66. Congratulations! You will never know the full impact that Zentangle has made on peoples lives but I would like to share my story. After surviving a devastating divorce, I decided it was time to "pass it on" and created a program called Living with Stress Creatively. I teach art journaling and after discovering Zentangle, added an introduction to the calming effects of Zentangles to my talk. It has been gratefully embraced to the groups I have talked to- mental health support groups, hospice volunteers, an Aids/HIV positive mens retreat, various church groups and jthis Sunday I will be talking to a small group of young widows. A wonderful tool for passing on God's peace to those in most need. Bless you.

  73. Like a moth to a flame, i was cruising a used book sale in its final minutes(fall 2009). My realtor had just suggested that i remove at least half the books in my house if i really wanted to sell it. The only other people in the tent were Suzanne McNeill and her daughter; Suzanne had just finished CZT#2. She was so excited at how this "Zentangle" she had just learned to teach was a perfect fit with my coaching practice..the rest is history, I am a CZT 3 from spring 2010 and i am forever grateful for this amazing practice, art form and community. Thank you Rick and Maria for persevering through the growth of Zentangle and, of course, Suzanne for her enthusiasm.

  89. I started tangling about 2years ago. I keep a steno notebook and micron pen on the nightstand and every night just before I turn out the light, I just mess around practicing one or two tangles. But, a lot of times it's just an entire page of Mookas, my favorite of all. It just helps me relax and clear my mind for sleep. Congrats to your entire team for 10 years and thank you for sharing your technique with us.

  103. I am a newbie at this art form ... and I took my first beginner workshop in January this year. I have taken 5 or 6 workshops since and am registered for a couple more before the summer is over. I hope to come for one of the CZT events next year. I absolutely love this art form! Though I would doodle when on phone calls or in classes prior to discovering the Zentangle world, this has opened up huge vistas for me and provided worlds where my creative juices can flow (or should I say flood)! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Congratulations on 10 years!

  104. Hello dear ones,

    (I'm sorry about my school-english)

congratulations to your tenth anniversary! I discovered your blog some months ago ... it is so inspiring! The first step for me was when I bought a tangle-newspaper in my super-marke that taught me how to do it ... and then the wheel be-gan to roll! I tried, I was thrilled, I drew and many people where infected. I don’t know so many people here in Ger-many who tangle but I think the number of followers will continuously grow.
Be furthermore happy in tangling and tell us more about it! I love it so much!
I’d like to be one of the winners very much – in deed! A such marvellous drawing!

Kind regards from over the ocean,
    Ulrike

  109. Many people have asked me how many years have the classes been taught. Now I have the answer! I know that at first the classes were given only twice a year rather than 4 times a year. It would be fun to hear a total of the number of people who have taken the classes…or a guestimate of how many. Maybe you could post that sometime. Like how many countries any how many students?

  114. I think everyone hopes to leave something permanent which will make the world a better place. For some the hope is through their children. For some through an invention, or deepening man's understanding of one thing or another. YOU were able to do it through your artistry and a rare understanding of a need for people to go inside themselves and experience peace. In this way you have touched more lives in more ways than you can imagine. And you leave a lasting legacy. CONGRATULATIONS on 10 years, and (very personally) thank you for this gift.

The benefits I've witnessed as a CZT with only 20 classes behind me are quite obvious and remarkable. YOUR courage, Rick and Maria, to take the chance and invest your time, talent, money, and effort to create and offer the Zentangle Method to the world is enriching COUNTLESS lives, every day. My most sincere THANK YOU. xoxo

  174. Love this amazingly simple way of expressing myself artistically. It is so much fun Zentagling with my three small grandchildren and seeing what their little minds create. Opens up a whole new way of communicating with them as we discuss each piece of work and why they chose the patterns and sometimes colours to create their zentangle.
Thank you for making Zentagle available to us all.

  192. I have been zentanging for a year and a half. It started as art therapy for me because of some very tragic things in my life. I also suffer from many health issues. I have Parkinson's and diabetes and major depression as well as bi polor. I never left my house for almost a year. After starting zentangle and doing it for many hours at a time because I was house bound, I have found that my hands don't shake so much and I have started selling my art at craft shows. This has gotten me out of the house and started to communicate with strangers. I now teach people at a nursing home and on a psych. ward. I just want to thank you for such a gift.

We had a wonderful Zentangle expo in Madison Wisconsin this past weekend arranged by Katie Butler as you well know. You would certainly be very proud of her and all she did to make it happen in such a short time. I will be looking forward to the second Expo, same time next summer. I'm sending you so many thanks for introducing Zentangle to the world. Warmest wishes are being sent to you from me. Deena
