Ten Years . . . Wow!

We can hardly believe that it has been 10 years since our first public Zentangle class.

The days, weeks and months . . . and years! . . . just seem to zip by . . . all in a revery of excitement and gratitude.

We are both surprised and not so surprised by the shear magnitude of spectacular art created by artists around the world using the Zentangle method.

We are thankful for the strong Zentangle community that has grown around us. Thank you each and every one, artists all, for your support, friendship and encouragement that has enabled us to continue our journey.

In celebration, we will be giving gifts to some lucky commenters on this blog post. After one week, we will randomly choose 10 names and send each person a signed print of this anniversary original we created and will release publicly soon.

We will announce the names on July 24, 2014.

Thank you from our tangled hearts. We love you all.

Rick & Maria, and the staff at Zentangle Central

P.S.
We taught our first public Zentangle class at the annual meeting of the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) in Providence, RI, July 17, 2004. There happened to be an astrologer in the front row. When she heard it was our first class, she noted the time and later sent us a chart. She said that Zentangle would grow slowly and steadily, and that it would benefit people all over the world. Sweet memories.

P.P.S.
Appropriate to our tenth anniversary, an important addition recently agreed to join our Zentangle staff and will help a lot with this blog. We look forward to posting more frequently. Introductions to follow shortly!

Happy "Zenth" Anniversary!

R&M

It has been said that "Time flies when you're having fun". These past 10 years prove that, don't they? Thanks for sharing this art form that is perfect for those of us who thought we had no talent.

Happy Anniversary! And thank you for making Zentangle such a huge part of my life. I absolutely love sharing it with so many people who, at one point in their lives, believed they couldn't do it. It is great being part of the "family"!

Congratulations on your huge success! About 8 months ago I noticed a Zentangle book being offered in an art instruction book club. My curiosity was aroused and I sent for it--best move I've made in years. I have been a passionate Zentangler ever since. When I cannot get out to my studio, I can still be artistically involved wherever I am. Keeps the creative juices flowing. Thank you for sharing your inspiration with the rest of the world.

In August of 2012 I arrived in Providence Rhode Island for my Zentangle conference! I left within 24 hours due to 3 abscessed teeth (thought I'd be able to handle it with ibuprofen!) Rick and Maria said - take care of yourself and we'll figure out how to get your Zentangle workshop later! In September 2012 (after a four tooth bridge was installed in my mouth) I arrived back in Providence! I stayed with a friend so I wouldn't have to pay for a hotel room again, and Rick and Maria provided me with everything I needed (and then some) to complete my initial training! I am forever grateful for the knowledge, philosophy and goodwill!!! Happy 10th and many more! Annette

I have used it with some of my clients who have brain injuries and have noted changes in their focus and so much more. I'm a Zentangle baby; been tangling just a couple of weeks. I wish I had discovered it long ago, I would have been a less stressed person. Zentangle is the only thing I have done that completely frees my mind from all my worries. When I tangle I think of absolutely nothing but my next stroke. Thank you for creating such an awesome tool for creativity and stress relief. Better than meditation and therapy! :-)

RIck and Maria,
I discovered Zentangle several years ago and it has done so many things for me... #1 has helped me to quiet my mind and I now have a regular meditation practice that I was never able to calm down enough to do before (I do still use my Zentangling to tame my brain as well)
#2 - I am now AN ARTIST... I believe, other people believe it and i feel as if I'm embracing my true nature
and finally, #3 i'm sending others to you and they love the practice as well....
my dream is to become a CZT and take it to the streets! So empowering. So beautiful. So affirming. Thank you and congratulations!

I found this on the internet
..................................Traditionally paper is associated with your 1st anniversary it is not considered to be as worthy as tin, which is the material associated with your 10th anniversary.

However a lot of great things are made with paper, items that have changed the world and so it can also be thought of as one of the most valuable gifts that you can give.
..................................
See you have changed the world and changed my life. I suffer from Panic Attacks and Zentangle has given me a way of coping and added such joy to my life. Now I have the tools to bring this incredible art form to others and I have been doing just that. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Happy 10th Anniversary.

Everyone we talk to about this totally accessible art form shows interest, and I don't doubt that our own little group will continue to blossom just as the Zentangle method has blossomed into a true gift to the world. Thanks seem so small for something that is making such a profound impact on the world "one stroke at a time."

Dear Rick and Maria Congratulations and many, many thanks for all you have done with your joyous inspiration for your ever-growing 'Zentangle World.'
I'm 70, disabled, particularly with arthritis in my hands, which for a Fine Artist specialising in textiles since having to stop sculpting.
I lost a lot of eye-hand control since a series of mini strokes five years ago.
You have given back that control - in spades, and I'vee only just realised that as well as tangling, I can return to my childhood love
( I had artist parents!) Of pen and ink drawing
too.
Also a few months ago, having been tangling for a relatively short while, I began falling over and collapsing. My Doctor discovered that I had low blood pressure, so took me off the strong medication that I have used for 35 years. My blood pressure now remains that of a much younger person - we quickly ruled out echinacea tea as the cause, which left a combination of two things.-
a closer walk with God, and Zentangling, both of which are central to my life. I can only say that I now share both loves with anyone who
who's interested. Thank you both, and many blessings. Judy Lisette Martin

I was born an artist, and in 2006 I discovered a form of drawing that already existed within me, which I called my "doodle-style", for lack of a better word. In 2013, friends of mine pointed me to Zentangle, saying that my art was very much like that form. What I have learned since then is that what I had always called "doodling" was NOT doodling at all, as my work had much thought behind it. I began to call my art form "intuitive art," as it moved and progressed from impulses within me. Zentangle art also does this, but it is something I can carry with me and produce about anywhere. I took to Zentangle like a fish to water (well, I am a Pisces, after all!), and I am so looking forward to my journey as a new CZT.

Happy Zenth Anniversary! In four short years since first discovering Zentangle in 2010, it is now hard to recall a time when it wasn't part of my life. Many thanks to CZTs Jeannie Mahood and Joan Payton for getting me 'hooked', and to the whole Zentangle family who amaze and delight me daily. Deborah Barwise CZT7, South Atlanta, Georgia

Congratulations on 10 years of Zenzational Zentangle. In those ten years, Zentangle has made its way around the world and yet it took the same amount of time for it to become known where I live, just 900 miles away in art-centric Asheville, NC.

Happy Zenth Anniversary to you! And many more.

Happy 10th Anniversary! Rick and Maria, when you started Zentangle 10 years ago, you created something far greater than the sum of its parts. Zentangle changes lives. From my short experience of a year and a half practicing the Zentangle Method, I have become a CZT, started my own business, and blossomed in my late 50's like never before in my adult life. You gave me a way to express my inner artist that had been lost since childhood. Bless you! Zentangle is a gift that keeps on giving - especially when shared with others! Thank you and your family for all the years of hard work and especially for creating Zentangle.

Congrats on 10 years! And THANK YOU! I would love to see a small beginner kit - you could call it "Zen-get started". I would love an inexpensive way to share this, with my fellow chemo patients.

My wife is a CZT, as is her best friend. I've been an avid tangler for almost two years and, seriously, i don't know what I'd do if suddenly I wasn't able to give time every day to some zentangling. Thank you very much for this life-enriching and, yes, meditative art form.

For at least five years or more your methods for Zentangle have given me some very calm moments. I took my kit with me when I had chemo for a week in the hospital. It helped so much. I have taught my granddaughter and she has given me such joy with her creations. This spring I told my grandson's first grade teacher to look up and use this to relax. She needed it!! And she and her daughter enjoyed it. One day I will join you to increase my knowledge.

Dear Rick and Maria,

I discovered Zentangle last summer, embracing it as therapy for me to reduce stress while being treated for locally advanced breast cancer. Almost every member of my health care team received a personalized bookmark with tangle patterns as a "Thank you!" for their hearts of gold as they helped me along the way. Sadly, my cancer has advanced to Stage IV, but Zentangle continues to be a significant part of my treatment plan. I'm hoping to meet you personally sometime this Fall at one of the CZT seminars- I'm on the wait lists and keeping my fingers crossed! Happy anniversary to a wonderful art form, and to both of you for gifting it to all of us.

Fond regards,
Christine Garrott

I have been tangling for about 2 1/2 years - what a fortuitous find it was! During that time, my daughter had to have emergency surgery, she lost her job, founded a new business and three weeks later she got diagnosed with cancer, having overcome that, she was then diagnosed with a severe inflammatory bowel disease and is slowly, very slowly coming out of the flare up. In addition, my husband has finally been diagnosed with severe PTSD after his stint in Vietnam. Tangling has been a place of peace during these tempestuous times - thank you! Jakki

In July of 2010, I found Zentangle on a friend's Facebook wall. The name and images were so intriguing I had to see more. What I found on Zentangle.com blew me away. I knew I had to draw like this and drew I did every day for 2 years.

I bought my first Zentangle kit from Earl and Lois Stokes in Hawaii.

In November 2010, I took Suzanne McNeill's Zentangle and Watercolor workshop at Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh, NC. Suzanne featured some of my work on her blog. What a vote of confidence.

In October 2011, I created a pair of Zentangle boots and flew to Providence to become a Certified Teacher.

The rest is the future.

Zentangle brought so many wonderful people into my life; CZTs and students alike.

I cannot thank you enough for making a remarkable difference in my life.
